Even if it's been 40 years since you graduated, alumni from your alma mater can still be a great group for networking. Check with the alumni office at any school you attended to find out when and where alums get together in your town. For instance, if you're a University of Florida alumnus, you can attend Gator Club meetings in 104 cities, ranging from Denver to Hong Kong. Your alumni office may also offer mentor programs or contact names of graduates working in your field. At some schools, the career center's resources are available to you, no matter how long it's been since you graduated.
